The project

The township council put on the record that data centres are not a permitted use in any Jackson zoning district, so any applicant would have to win a use variance from the zoning board.

What usually comes next

The board usually votes once its questions are answered, then puts the decision in writing in a resolution.

Steps so far

  1. The planning board voted 6 to 1 that the council's pending Ordinance 2026-25, which would specifically bar data centres, is not consistent with the township's master plan. Its job at this step was only to compare the ordinance with the master plan, not to decide whether data centres should be allowed. Reasons given in the minutes include that a specific ban could give an applicant more to argue against the township.

  2. Jackson Township Council president read the township planner's memo on a proposed data centre ordinance and said it would be reviewed by the attorney and placed on the next agenda.

  3. The council discussed data centres at length and read the township solicitor's memorandum into the record. No ordinance was introduced.
